I’m reflecting on how I might improve my overall health and wellbeing and tackling it from every angle. One of these is thinking about what I put in my gob. A few years back someone told me about the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties of turmeric.. Allegedly it’s best taken in the form of ‘golden paste’, a concoction where pepper and coconut oil are added to the spice. These ingredients apparently aid the uptake of the curcumin, the active ingredient of turmeric for both you and your furry friends. Note my judicial use of words that suggest that claims might not be proven. I don’t want to be making any sound health claims. I’m just saying that I’m giving it a go.
Here’s a link from the Turmeric Life website to a recipe for golden paste. It’s the one that i used to make this jar with. I’m now having a couple of teaspoons a day. There’s a couple of warnings here. Grinding 2-3 teaspoons of pepper in a mill takes an age and if you get any of the mixture on your hands you’ll end up looking like a lifelong sixty a day smoker. Now I’m going to be honest. I find golden paste truly horrible in its raw form so I’m a big brave soldier taking it.
But it was tasty stirred into the spicy potato and spinach that I served with leftover korma and naan the other day. I boiled some small potatoes in their skin, microwaved a couple of portions of spinach and fried a slice onion with cumin, coriander and a pinch of chilli. Then I mixed it all together with a good dollop of the golden paste. It was much more palatable than my normal daily dose. I am minded to find more recipes to ‘hide my medicine’!
